Level Objectives Teaching Methods and Materials
Level 1 Students learn basic skills for everyday life such as how to introduce themselves, buy things, order food, etc.
Students learn to construct simple sentences with approximately 800 basic vocabulary items and basic grammatical structures.
Level 1 textbooks and audiovisual materials used
Level 2 Students learn to understand and construct sentences useful for everyday life and appropriate use of different types of language for formal and informal situations. They learn language relevant for different activities in their lives as international students, such as making Korean friends, asking for directions, purchasing items in a store, travelling on buses, etc. and also language relating to Korean cultural events, traditional game and Korean foods, etc.
On completion of this level students are able to use approximately 1,500 vocabulary items and to both understand and construct slightly more complex sentences, such as asking for directions.
Level 2 textbooks and audiovisual materials used
Level 3 At this intermediate level of Korean students finish learning most vocabulary required for everyday life. They learn language to use at public institutions such the Immigration Office and travel agencies, etc. and language helpful for maintaining social relationships such as for explaining, describing and refusing, etc. Students acquire the ability not only to express information about themselves, but also to discuss concepts relevant to wider society, such as work, accidents and controversial incidents, and nations and culture, in longer constructions and paragraphs. Level 3 textbooks and audiovisual materials used
Level 4 Students learn to use language in ways necessary for research in a specific field or for business, such as summarizing, arguing a case, reasoning and discussion, etc. On completion of this level students have developed a strong command of language for formal and informal contexts as well as spoken and written language forms and are able to understand and produce essays, reports and literary works and to also participate in (formal) conversations and debates, etc. Level 4 textbooks and audiovisual materials used
Level 5 Students' pronunciation is refined to near-native ability.
They are able to understand Korean idiomatic expressions and have a deeper understanding of Korean culture.
Language education is focused on technical language to prepare for study in the specialized fields of university majors.
